2017-05-20 Furtherfield Gallery, London

Showing terra0 in the NEW WORLD ORDER Exhibition together with Jaya Klara Brekke, Pete Gomes, Rob Myers, Primavera De Filippi of O’Khaos, Lina Theodorou and xfx (aka Ami Clarke) in London at Furtherfield Gallery. Saturday 20 May until Sunday 25 Jun 2017

A mysterious and controversial technology is among us. The Blockchain underpins digital currencies and makes possible dramatic new conceptions of global governance and economy, that could permanently enrich or demote the role of humans – depending on who you talk to.

A self-owning forest with ideas of expansion, a self-replicating android flower, a tale of lost innocence, a DIY money making rig, a Hippocratic Oath for software developers, a five minute marriage contract; this exhibition presented by Furtherfield shows us life with blockchain technologies – through artworks by Jaya Klara Brekke, Pete Gomes, Rob Myers, Primavera De Filippi of O’Khaos, Terra0, Lina Theodorou and xfx (aka Ami Clarke).

Imagine a world in which responsibility for many aspects of life (reproduction, decision-making, organisation, nurture, stewardship) are mechanised and automated. Transferred, once and for all, from natural and social systems into a secure, networked, digital ledger of transactions and computer-executed contracts.

The artworks in this exhibition envision future world-making by machines, markets and natural processes, free from interference by states and other human institutions.

What are the values and infrastructures that we humans use to create with the world’s resources? and what alternative value systems can we propose that support a more sustainable and less harmful, integrated relationship? Terra0 offers us a kind of capitalist system that forges new ecologies, by putting a forest on the block chain it effectively hacks the current economic system in an attempt to place nature and capitalism on equal terms, by giving ownership of the forest, to the forest itself. Terra0 stands up to the challenge of merging the two seemingly separate worlds of capital and nature, through the digital infrastructure of the block chain we find that on a planetary scale the virtual and the natural are inseparable.

terra0 will be shown at FIBER Festival from 12 May till 21 May. Looiersgracht 60 Amsterdam

How can we reimagine roles for technology in the natural environment? Can we think outside the human and repurpose technological systems and infrastructures to serve nonhuman organisms and beings? Answers to these questions will be offered through presentations of researchers and artists, who are developing hybrid systems and prototypes for living landscapes, taking their intrinsic and diverse forms of agency into consideration. In this panel, prototypes for environmental robotics and a model for a self-owned augmented forest will be discussed. Speakers explore to which extent new symbiotic relationships between machinic and heterogeneous living nonhumans can be achieved when nature’s rhythm is acknowledged and human roles are purposefully limited to being the initiator or diligent maintainer.

Becoming Earth: Engineering Symbiotic Futures, panel discussion at the transmediale17 with Theun Karelse, Paul Seidler and me. Fri, 03.02.2017 / 16:30 - 18:00 in the Studio at HKW Berlin.
